課程概述

Examination and critical evaluation of selected evidence based methods of intervention; research on their effectiveness; and application to specific problems of children, adolescents and their families that come to the attention of social workers and other helping professionals is the focus of this course. Attention is given to prevention and remediation. The goals of this course are: (1) foster understanding of the global status of children and adolescent; (2) to assist students in developing an understanding of available evidence based strategies for effective interventions with children, adolescents, and their families; (3) to assist students in developing knowledge of appropriate prevention and intervention strategies for application in the context of social work values and ethics; and (4) to provide a safe classroom environment for students to practice their own skills in working with children, adolescents and caregivers. Special emphasis will focus on consideration of differential assessment and intervention skills that incorporate an understanding and appreciation of the diverse experiences (culture, race, ethnicity, gender, age, religious/spiritual, socio-economic class, physical and mental disability, family configuration, family dynamics, and consequences of social and economic injustice, oppression and discrimination), needs, and beliefs of the children and families served. Interventions will be considered in light of international, national, and local social policies and programs and their effect on children, adolescents, and families.

課程目標
1. Increased knowledge of how normal child and adolescent development affect assessment and intervention in social work practice with infants, children, adolescents and their families.
2. Knowledge of how to evaluate research evidence for specific intervention strategies.
2. Knowledge of selected evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies for effective application in social work practice with infants, children, adolescents and their families.
3. Knowledge to evaluate the efficacy, efficiency, and appropriateness of the intervention considering Taiwanese culture, language and immigration issues.
4. Knowledge of the application of social work values and ethics in interventions with infants, children, adolescents and their families.
5. Skills to identify and apply appropriate intervention strategies for infants, children, adolescents and their families demonstrating an appreciation of the diverse experiences (culture, ethnicity, family configuration, dynamics and consequences of social and economic injustice, oppression and discrimination) needs and beliefs of the children and families served.
6. Use understanding of problems of infants, children, adolescents and families to advocate for appropriate evidence based interventions in service agencies and policies at the county and national level.
課程要求
1) Attendance/Participation: Points are assigned based on the number of classes the student comes on time, stays until the end, and actively participates in class activities.
2) Class assignments. See syllabus.

3) Summary of readings. One page summaries of the assigned readings using the format provided
by the professor. This assignment gives you an opportunity to think about the class readings prior
to class to better participate in class and small group discussions. These will be collected at the end of the class period.

4) Literature Review for Research Synthesis. Using the techniques described in the reading for
class by Lucas and Cutspec, (2007).The role and process of literature searching in the preparation of a research synthesis. Winterberry Research Perspectives, 10, 1-26, and discussed in class. You will do a literature review on the child and adolescent intervention of your choice. This could be a current evidence based intervention described in our text or another that is used only in Taiwan. I suggest that the focus of the literature review be the intervention that you will write about in your Research Synthesis paper.

5) Research Synthesis.
This assignment gives you an opportunity to explore in greater depth one evidence based intervention for application with infants, children, or adolescents and their families that is of interest to you. The length of the paper is 8 - 10 pages (double spaced). All parts of the paper must be in APA (Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5h Edition, 2001) format including citations and reference list. There should be a minimum of five recent references (post-2000) from the professional literature.
Written Paper: The 8-10 page paper and one page outline with references describing the intervention are due in class as indicated in the syllabus. Copies of the one page outline describing the intervention you researched with references you used printed on the back will be provided for each class member and the instructor. (The outline will assist you in orally describing your intervention to the class and provide each class member with the benefit of your research.)
Intervention paper (50 Points) + Outline (10 Points) = 60 Points.
